Smrkov has an interesting tradition – every year a king is chosen here. This happens in the small pub, Na kovárně. If fortune is on your side and the pub is open (weekend), you can read the king’s orders on the walls.
From M2 by chairlift… then on your bike through Ounuz, Cunkov to Jistebnice famed for its Jistebnický kancionál (Jistebnice Hymnal). There is a romantic fountain on the square. After Jistebnice, we head for Ludvíkov, Vesec. We pass the herd of deer in the field to our right, and go through Kostelec to Borotín (one of the oldest villages in the Tábor region). Here we take a turn to our destination – the Starý zámek water tower. The tower lies on what used to be an important route from Austria to Bohemia. We return to Borotín and continue to the castle in Kamenná Lhota where writer Vladislav Vančura, author of Rozmarné léto (Summer of Caprice) stayed. Via Smrkov, Nehonín and Brtný, we return to Cunkov. We take the chairlift back to M2.
Our destination is the Old Castle at Borotín, which lies in the middle of Route 5. Legends say there is an underground tunnel from the reservoir. When they where trying to find out where it comes out, they tied a bow around a duck’s neck and placed it into the tunnel. The next day, the duck was in Jordán lake 18 km away in Tábor…
